Penelitian alat PCD dilakukan lebih awal dan penerapannya lebih matang di negara-negara maju industri. Sejak membuat batu pertama buatan Swedia pada 1953, teknologi ini telah menghasilkan banyak hasil dalam penelitian kemampuan memotong pisau PCD. Saat ini, produsen chip komposit berlian buatan yang terkenal di dunia internasional itu sebagian besar terdiri dari perusahaan Dybirs di Inggris, General Electric di Amerika Serikat, dan perusahaan Sumitomotor di Jepang.
Melaporkan, pada kuartal pertama 1995 saja Jepang telah memproduksi 10,7 juta pisau PCD. Pengaplikasian alat pisau PCD telah diperluas dari mobil semula untuk dibor dan dikupas. Unit-unit yang melakukan pengembangan dan produksi alat PCD dalam negeri adalah Shanghai Tree Hat, Zhengzhou Shinyi, Nanjing Lanche, Shenzhen, Chengdu Institut Alat, Chengdu Dai Dreamland, dan lain-lain.
Saat ini, ruang lingkup pengolahan alat pisau PCD telah diperluas dari pengolahan potongan logam tradisional hingga pengolahan batu, pengolahan kayu, bahan komposit berbahan dasar logam, kaca, keramik teknik, dan lain-lain.
